HOW TO BE PREPARED FOR A DISASTER
Is 2018 your year to get organized? People often think of organization as an occasional task of getting knick-knacks and Christmas decorations in order for the off-season; but how can we keep what’s important organized in case of an emergency? Here are some items to have organized if a disaster were to strike in your area.
Important Documents - Keep a file in an easy to reach place. Make sure you have documents for all family members including passports, social security cards, birth certificates, important medical information, etc.
Emergency Preparedness Kit - If disaster strikes you want to have enough supplies for you and your family to last at least 72 hours. This should include a collection of basic items of food, water, clothing, medical supplies, pet food, etc. It’s also important to have cash on hand in case the ATMs and other electronic services are not available.
Keepsakes - Give everyone in your home a box to store keepsakes in that they would be able to grab quickly. You won’t be able to take everything with you, but a few things will make a big difference.
Inventory of Possessions - Write down the name and description of valuables in your home for insurance purposes in case anything is lost. Be sure to include serial numbers and models. Next take a video or photo of every room in your home including all of the items in it. Don’t forget to also photograph the outside of your home and cars. Store this information on your computer and hard drive and be sure to put in a place that is easy to grab.
Emergency Contact - Do you know where you would go if a disaster struck in your area? In your emergency plan for your family, have someone you can contact to stay with for a few days.
When you’re organized you will be prepared for almost any disaster. Rest easy knowing your family will be cared for in the event of an emergency.
