Easy Portable Garage Ideas

If you have a bit of property without a garage, and you want to protect your car, truck, boat or tractor from the elements, the answer is a portable garage. Portable garages are temporary structures that you build yourself, usually from a kit, although some companies give you the option of designing your own. They also come in handy to protect your vehicle during long-term camping or can serve as a storage shed for lawn mowers, barbecues, and other outdoor equipment.

One type of portable garage is a steel frame system with UV resistant and weather resistant fabric covering. These come in a multitude of sizes, shapes and colors. They are pretty lightweight (for instance, a structure big enough to cover your car may weigh less than 200 pounds when disassembled) and are reasonably priced (often less than $2000).These kinds of structures can be used for cars, trucks, boats, RV’s, campers, storage sheds and more. Some of these companies even offer versions that are appropriate as green houses or animal shelters.

Another type of portable garage is a temporary metal carport. These resemble the metal carports that are attached to many condos and apartment homes of the 1960’s and 1970’s. The frames are of galvanized steel, and the roof can support snow and protect against hail.

As with the previous type of structure, these metal carports are available in a wide variety of sizes, from small enough to cover a motorcycle or two to large enough to protect your RV. When assembling your portable garage, it’s important to first check building codes for your area. A homeowners’ association or city code may prevent you from putting up a temporary structure

in a visible area or at all. Next, make sure the area where you’re putting the garage is level, and make sure you have all the necessary parts and hardware to anchor it to the ground. You want it to be secure and not blow over or crash into your vehicle. A portable garage is a great option when you need temporary or permanent shelter for your car, truck, boat or other vehicle.
